Upcoming Trip: 3rd Jan 09, Dargans Creek Canyon

Neil has kindly organised another canyoning trip for anyone interested this time at Dargans Creek Canyon on the 3rd of January 09, a highly recommended introductory canyon!

If interested in attending please let me know at the earliest convenience so I can provide rough numbers to Neil.

Trip Details

Date: 3rd Jan 2009, Dargans Creek Canyon
Location: Blue Mountains
Trip Type: Canyoning, full day trip
Trip Start: 9.30am Richmond McDonalds, Intersection of Market St & March St which is right on Richmond Station. See the end of this post for a map.
Trip End: Back in Sydney roughly 4pm
Organiser: Neil R, I'll assist with planning on our end (contact numbers available in private)
Transport: Car Pooling, we'll need to organise rides amongst ourselves
What to bring:
- Closed shoes with grip (Dunlop Volleys are excellent, my pair was $22 at Target)
- Flip-flops to change into when back at the car
- Thick socks, or wear 2 pairs to avoid blisters
- Clothing - avoid cotton if possible. To maximise comfort here are some suggestions: Synthetic shirt (polyester, nylon etc), boardies or synthetic zip-off pants
- Dry clothes to change back into at the car
- Water, if well hydrated before starting 1L should suffice (e.g. 2x600ml, 1L sport bottles, hydration pack)
- High energy snacks e.g. Mars Bars, Snickers, Star Burst, Muesli
- Optional: Wetsuit, lots of factors to consider with this one (water temp, personal sensitivity to cold etc). If you decide to rent a wetsuit, they can be hired for $19/day @ http://www.deep6diving.com.au/ (West Ryde/Clovelly)
- Optional: Bag - if you do bring a bag, keep it small & ensure it has holes water can escape. A small hydration pack was perfect & allowed me to slot a few snacks in. In the previous canyon most people simply brought a water bottle, I'd also suggest packing some snacks in your pockets if that's the case

Don't let this list discourage you from attending! (I tend to waffle on about comfort) It's definitely worth while, if you haven't been canyoning before it is a great opportunity to try something new this new year! :D




After we meet at Richmond's Mcdonalds at 9.30am, we'll drive up together to Dargans Creek which should be a little over an hour by car.

Alas, Canyoning!

Canyoning has long been on my to do list due to its uniqueness incorporating various techniques to traverse natural & beautiful environments accessible only by foot.

Chang & I had the wonderful opportunity to go canyoning in the Blue Mountains on Saturday thanks to Neil who kindly organised a trip through Twister Canyon & Rocky Creek Canyon!

Due to an awesome Friday night of food, drinks & jamming at Leon's Boxing Day barbeque, Chang & I only managed to scavenge 5 hours sleep with near no preparation for our first canyoning experience! Chang dragged his car around to my place on time at 6.30am surprisingly, unsurprisingly I was running a little slow having not eaten breakfast. We opted to eat breaky at home over trusty McDonald's as I thought it would be unfair to implicate Ronald McDonald of contaminating crisp mountain water, strewn with half-digested McMuffins & hash browns when poor Ronnie does not even canyoneer!

Chang & I were so ill prepared we did not have supplies for the day, undeterred we dropped by a petrol station to buy water & the secret energy source of true champions - Mars Bars! Disaster averted.

After we drove 50 minutes to Richmond's McDonald's, we met Neil & Co (11 others) all devouring what they thought was the energy source of true champions, McDonald's breakfast! This could not be good for the crisp, clear canyon water we were soon to be purified in...I'm almost certain McDonald's meals were not intended to be digested as they already are so processed, there's no further need to process on our part therefore the human body treats it as it would a foreign object & expels it! Thankfully today, the McDonald's meals found it in their heart to be digested.

As we were about to leave McDonald's we found out the canyons were still a good 2 hours drive away - 2 hours more than we had hoped for in our weary state.

[2 hours later...]

Having conquered the beaten dirt road we arrived at Rocky Creek car park in one piece, Chang convinced me his Mazda Astina hatchback really was, in fact a hummer. Who was I to doubt him? In the space of 2 hours he had transformed the colour of his car from blue to brown (double coated also) without moving from the driver's seat - I was seriously impressed.

A short bushwalk down towards Twister Canyon & I felt the buzz of being outdoors again. For the rest of the day my body had forgotten it lacked rest, surging through on adrenaline in the superb company of friends & canyons.

As we entered the gorge the environment changed quickly from one I was relatively comfortable bushwalking in, to an unfamiliar wet environment. That first experience of having little choice but to sink my shoes followed by my hesitant body into chilled water was literally breathtaking as I awoke to this unique moment.

What follows I think is either a love or hate affair with canyons, as adventurers often quote, you can usually tell after the first trip whether a first timer will return!

Canyoning with spectacles on was rather interesting. No real dramas if you hold onto them while jumping, if you aren't a strong swimmer it does begin to erode your doggy-paddle though. Climbing out of potholes can be a little challenging, and if that wasn't already hard enough picture a blind man running blindly down a canyon after his specs as they made a bid for freedom. If you do have contact lenses a friend at work Max suggested wearing swimming goggles for the jumps.

Twister Canyon & Rocky Creek Canyon are well documented so I won't go into detail.

In short:
- Twister Canyon was filled with plenty of jumps into potholes & fun slides with little swimming involved. There were mandatory jumps, most being only a couple of metres in height.
- Rocky Creek Canyon was more technical with the fun climbs, we were in water most of the time wading & swimming but only for a few metres at a time (10m being the longest). No jumps in this canyon from memory.

Both canyons were introductory yet amazingly beautiful. Even if you don't see yourself canyoning or taking it up as a regular activity, at least check out these 2 canyons with an experienced group which can be easily done consecutively in a day.

As our memorable day came to an end in the early afternoon, we drove out of the mountains just as the rain hit. Chang & I knew we had to get to a Thai restaurant for some serious eating, I was so hungry I ate as though the success of the business depended on me - I like to think I did them proud!

Cowan Station to Brooklyn, 2nd Nov 08

Good turn out for today's walk from Cowan Station to Brooklyn, Peter B gladly joined us at short notice which made it a strong group of 8 walkers.

To my amazement everyone arrived earlier than the proposed meeting time & came prepared! With the advent of the mobile phone I thought the days of arriving on time were long gone :)

As expected the walk definitely was an easy 5 hour stroll (lunch included) over the 11.2km traversed. I'm sure most of us would agree only the section following Jerusalem Bay caused a real puff, a climb of 200m over 600m.

4WD tracks are rarely picturesque however the spot Ant & Laura picked out for lunch I thought was amazing, overlooking the seemingly endless valleys & Hawkesbury River.

In short a good introductory walk for first timers, the group was very capable & should be rewarded with much greater intensity walks! :D

We had an out of control photography crew today so there should be plenty of photos, let me know of any links to photos from today anyone would like added to the bottom of this post. (for Flickr users I'll post some instructions on how to post to the TAS pool)

Ram, you owe me a toilet roll.

Trip Planned: Cowan to Brooklyn Station, 2nd Nov 08

We've had enough interest for a day walk tomorrow, 2nd Nov 08 up north in the Kuringai Chase National Park.

The walk starts at Cowan Station & conveniently ends at Hawkesbury River Station (Brooklyn), a distance of 11.2km which should take 4.5-5 hours to walk.

I've proposed 2 meeting locations, one at Hornsby Station (ticket gates) at 10am to catch the 10:22am Station to Cowan Station arriving 10:36am. Alternatively you can meet us at Cowan Station at 10:36am. Please advise in advance where you'll be meeting so we know who to wait for.

I'll provide trip notes & maps on the day however if you could bring your own food & hydration that would be great! (if you intend on returning)

We should be done by 3.30-5pm I think, the most likely trains to catch back from Hawkesbury River Station to Hornsby Station will be 4:37pm, 5:37pm & less likely the 6:37pm.

The forecast for tomorrow looks cool with a chance for a possible light drizzle, a poncho/umbrella wouldn't be a bad idea. I'd recommend being sufficiently hydrated before you begin & you shouldn't need too much hydration (~2L).

What to bring? Loose clothing is good (sporty synthetic stuff), avoid cotton clothing if you can. Comfortable walking shoes, hat, poncho/umbrella. Food & water. Some cash for transport & food if we eat after. Most importantly yourself! The walk is very picturesque (Jerusalem Bay) so a camera would be handy.
